29 Physician Specialties Ranked By Burnout Rates

Urologists have the highest rates of burnout among all physician specialties, according to a recent survey.

For the survey, 15,181 physicians were polled from more than 29 specialties between June 25 and Sept. 19, 2019.

Across all specialties, 42 percent of physicians reported burnout, down 4 percent from 2015.

Here's how each specialty stacked up:

1. Urology — 54 percent of physicians reported burnout

2. Neurology — 50 percent

3. Nephrology — 49 percent

4. Diabetes and endocrinology — 46 percent

Family medicine — 46 percent

Radiology — 46 percent

Obstetrics and gynecology — 46 percent

Rheumatology — 46 percent

5. Infectious diseases — 45 percent

6. Critical care — 44 percent

Cardiology — 44 percent

Internal medicine — 44 percent

7. Physical medicine and rehabilitation — 43 percent

Emergency medicine — 43 percent

8. Oncology — 42 percent

9. Anesthesiology — 41 percent

Pediatrics — 41 percent

Pulmonary medicine — 41 percent

10. Allergy and immunology — 38 percent

11. Plastic surgery — 37 percent

12. Gastroenterology — 36 percent

Dermatology — 36 percent

Pathology — 36 percent

13. General surgery — 35 percent

Otolaryngology — 35 percent

Psychiatry — 35 percent

14. Orthopedics — 34 percent

15. Ophthalmology — 30 percent

16. Public health and preventive medicine — 29 percent
