By 2033, all physician and surgeon positions are projected to grow by an overall average of 4%, but one physician specialty is projected to grow 8% by then, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics data.
An average of 23,600 positions for physicians and surgeons are expected to open each year. Many of them are expected to open due to transfers or workforce exits.
Here are 13 physician specialties, by their projected growth rates:
Psychiatrists: 8%
Neurologists: 7%
Dermatologists: 7%
Physicians, pathologists: 5%
Family medicine physicians: 5%
Cardiologists: 5%
Anesthesiologists: 4%
Physicians, all other: 4%
Radiologists: 4%
Emergency medicine physicians: 3%
General internal medicine physicians: 3%
OB-GYNs: 3%
Pediatricians, general: 2%
